Q: I’m new to mobile phone privacy and need more information
I love Naomi Brockwell explainers, look at her video on how to Make Your Phone More Private
Q: What is GrapheneOS?
GrapheneOS is a privacy and security focused mobile OS with Android app compatibility developed as a non-profit open source project. It’s focused on the research and development of privacy and security technology including substantial improvements to sandboxing, exploit mitigations and the permission model.
Q: How do I donate to GrapheneOS to continue this work?
I believe in value-for-value, so I donate $10 for every phone that I sell or install.
Q: What Pixel phones are recommended for having the most security updates?
Recommended: 8, 8a, 8 Pro, 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro Fold
The Pixel 8 and 9 series have security updates for seven years. The Pixel 8 has security updates until October 2030 and the Pixel 9 has security updates until August 2031.
Pixel 8 and 9’s have ARMv9 CPUs and hardware memory tagging that improves device security.
Supported: 6, 6a, 6 Pro, 7, 7a, 7 Pro, Pixel Tablet, Pixel Fold
The Pixel 6 and 7 series have security updates for five years. The Pixel 6 has security updates until October 2026 and the Pixel 7 has security updates until October 2027.
Note that the Pixel 7 has a better performance/price ratio over the Pixel 6.

Q: What Applications/Applications Stores are available?
GrapheneOS doesn’t install Google Play Services by default. Most modern Android applications can be run without Google Play Services, but some will miss push notifications.
Some applications require Google Play Services. GrapheneOS will sandbox Google Play Services which gives some protection. Michael Bazzell doesn’t install it, but says that most of his clients do install Google Play Services. It’s recommended to create a profile and run all applications that require Google Play Services in that profile.
Included with GrapheneOS – Contacts, Clock, Calculator, Files, Gallery, Phone, SMS Messaging (minimal applications for best security)
GrapheneOS App Store – Camera, PDF viewer, GrapheneOS Auditor, Vanadium (web browser), sandboxed Google Play Services (if needed)
Obtainium – Any open-source android applications (apk) available on sites like Github. Use this for critical use applications. (Advanced)
Zap.Store – Open-Source apps verified by the NOSTR web-of-trust. (Beginner)
F-Droid – Open-Source applications (Beginner)
Aurora Store – Open Source replacement for Google Play Store. Use as last resort for applications.
I run all of these stores to test them, which causes some conflict. I recommend that you first start with Obtainium for your most important apps, then add other app stores as needed (start with Zap Store, then consider F-Droid and Aurora).
Q: What security features does GrapheneOS provide?
There are many kinds of security features, too many to list on this page. See https://grapheneos.org/features for more information.
Q: I have more questions about GrapheneOS?
See https://grapheneos.org/faq
Q: What guarantee do you offer?
I have a 30-day money back guarantee. Phone must be in original condition with all packaging and materials.
Q: What warranty do you offer?
I cannot provide a warranty as changing the bootloader and OS will void your Pixel’s warranty. I can only test and verify functionality of the mobile device.
Q: What device should I purchase?
Here are some key factors to consider when choosing between Google Pixel 7, 8, 9 series and their Pro/A variants:
Feature | Pixel 7 Series | Pixel 8 Series | Pixel 9 Series |
---|---|---|---|
Display | 6.3″ 90Hz, 1400 nits | 6.2-6.7″ 120Hz, 1400-1800 nits | 6.3″ 120Hz, 1800-3000 nits |
Performance | Tensor G2, 8GB RAM | Tensor G3, 8-12GB RAM | Tensor G4, 12-16GB RAM |
Cameras | 50MP main + 12MP ultra | 50MP main + 48MP tele | 50MP main + 48MP tele + ultra |
Battery | 4355 mAh | 4400-5050 mAh | 4700-4650 mAh |
Special Features | IP68, Classic design | Face Unblur, Macro Focus | Foldable option (Pro Fold) |
- Pro versions offer telephoto lenses, larger batteries, and premium builds
- A models (7a/8a) maintain core camera quality with slightly lower specs and more affordable pricing
Recommendation:
- Budget pick: Pixel 7 series
- Balanced choice: Pixel 8 Pro for camera/display improvements and hardware memory tagging.
- Future-proof: Pixel 9 Pro for latest AI features and foldable innovation
Consider display brightness (1000-3000 nits), weight differences (9 series heaviest), and camera processing improvements in newer models.
